As we gear up for the excitement of this year’s Kentucky Derby at Dabney & Co., it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the rich and often overlooked history of Black jockeys who have played a pivotal role in shaping this iconic American sporting event.

The Kentucky Derby, often referred to as the most exciting two minutes in sports, has a history deeply intertwined with Black jockeys. In fact, when the Derby first started in 1875, 13 of the 15 jockeys were African American. One of these jockeys, Oliver Lewis, rode to victory on a horse named Aristides, marking the beginning of what would become a dominant era for Black jockeys in the early years of the Derby.

During the late 19th century, Black jockeys were among the most successful and celebrated in the sport. Isaac Murphy, one of the most legendary figures in horse racing, won the Kentucky Derby three times, a feat that helped cement his status as one of the greatest jockeys in American history. His success rate of winning an astounding 44% of all the races he rode in remains unmatched, underscoring his skill and determination.

However, the turn of the century brought significant changes as Jim Crow laws and growing racial tensions led to the marginalization of Black jockeys. By 1921, they had completely disappeared from the Kentucky Derby, a stark departure from their earlier prominence.

Today, while the landscape of horse racing has changed, the early contributions of Black jockeys to the Kentucky Derby are undeniable. Their skills, resilience, and achievements paved the way for the modern racing we know today, and their legacy is a story of both triumph and adversity.
